20 to 2

What a way to start a season.  Looper looked pretty good through 5 innings.  I figured he would probably pitch five, I wish I were right.  He came out and gave up 3 in the sixth.  The bullpen gave up 7 more including 5 by Russ Springer in 1/3 of an inning and 2 by Hancock in a 2/3 of an inning.  Offensively, not much to talk about as the Cardinals only got two hits.  Defensively, the outfield made another error.  As usual, Carlos Beltran owned the Cardinals, hitting two HRs.

News on Carpenter is that he should be ready to go on Tuesday the 10th.  He got clearance to start throwing to prepare for this start.  Spiezio was out again with a sore back.  Looks like it might be awhile before he is playing regularly. The Cards could really use his bat right now.

I am not saying the sky is falling but the Cardinals became the first World Series team to start 0-3 since 1984.  If healthy, the rotation could be pretty good.  Izzy looked good in his late game action on Wednesday night.  My worry is the everyday lineup.  The outfield is so weak and even when JuanE. comes back I don’t think you can expect much as it usually takes quite a while to come back from a wrist injury.  See the Cubs Derek Lee in 06. It seems this team is just going through the motions.  Maybe the road trip will do them some good.

Notes from around MLB:

The Cubs’ Ted Lilly had a very strong debut striking out 9 in 7 innings against Cincy.

Former Card Woody Williams was shaky giving up 5 runs in 4 2/3.

Mr. Nice Guy, Barry Bonds, hit his first HR of the season.  He is now 20 away from Hank Aaron.

Former Missouri Tiger, Ian Kinsler, 2B for the Rangers, already has 2 HRs on the young season.

The Pirates swept the Astros.

Today the Minor League Season begins.

Southeast lost its third straight, losing at Missouri State on Wednesday.
