Braden Looper looked pretty good yesterday earning his first victory as a starter. I know this is only his second big league start but he has already done better than I ever thought he would. I guess Dave Duncan knows more about pitching than I do.
Carpenter was placed on the 15 day DL. LHP Randy Kiesler will take Carp’s spot in the rotation. In his big league career he is has a 6.82 ERA in 17 starts and 34 relief appearances as a major leaguer. So far the others in the rotation have stepped up. Sometimes an injury can be beneficial to a team as the other players have to step up to fill the void. Don’t get me wrong, I would much rather have a healthy Chris Carpenter. But maybe the added responsibility on everyone else will make this rotation stronger.
The Top 25 is out and Vandy is still #1. Mizzou makes it debut in the BA Poll at #25. SIU will visit Southeast this afternoon starting at 3.
Cardinal prospect Jaime Garcia earned his first Double A victory last night going 5 innings and giving up 2 runs with 5 K’s. Prospects Jon Jay, Colby Rasmus, and Brian Anderson had 2 hits a piece. Tyler Greene hit his first Double A homerun. Chris Perez pitched one inning and struck out the side.
Brandon Yarbrough and Jose Martinez had two hits a piece for Palm Beach.
The pitching staff for Quad Cities had 13 strikeouts in a 5-1 loss. Mike Schellinger and Shaun Garceau combined for 11 strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Blake Hawsworth gave up 5 runs in 5 innings in his Triple A debut, a loss. Mark Worrell and Dennis Dove each pitched two scoreless innings. Memphis had only 4 hits. Former Cardinal Fernando Tatis had two hits against his former organization.
Blake Dewitt went 0 for 4 last night for the Inland Empire. It looks like he will have a pretty good teammate for a couple of games. Dodger SS Rafael Furcal (ankle) will begin a two-game rehab assignment at Single-A Inland Empire on Tuesday and rejoin the Dodgers on Friday.
Mike Hampton will be out for the season with an elbow injury.
Bad news for rock fans. Jason Isbell and the Drive By Truckers have parted ways. The official release from Patterson Hood is here. If you have never seen DBT live, do so, you will not be disappointed. I think Isbell wanted to work on his own material, and with 2 other such talented guys, Hood and Mike Cooley, you can only fit so much on one album.
