Cardinals get the brooms out

The Cardinals completed their first sweep of the season, beating Pittsburgh 3-2.  Chris Duncan came up as a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth and hit a HR that proved to be the game winner.  Adam Wainwright went 6.2 innings and gave up 2 runs.  Ryan Franklin picked up the win.  The Cardinals have an off day on Thursday and then open a weekend set with Milwaukee on Friday.  The Cardinals are now in first place in the NL Central.

Memphis fell to New Orleans 6 to 1.  Nick Stavinoha went 3 for 4 in a losing effort.  Ryan Ludwick contributed 2 hits.  Mike Smith was saddled with the loss.  He went six innings, gave up 3 runs, and struck out five.  Reliever Dennis Dove gave up 2 runs in 1 inning pitched.  Troy Cate gave up one run in two innings and struck out 5.

Springfield had the night off.

Palm Beach beat St. Lucie 2 to 0.  Dan Nelson drove in both runs for the Cardinals.  Tyler Norrick got the win, pitching six strong innings.  Former catcher, Jason Motte, got the save.

Quad Cities was rained out.

Blake Dewitt got to go up against another Major League pitcher on Wednesday, Jared Weaver. Dewitt was 1 for 3 against Weaver with his only hit being a double.  He was 2 for 4 for the game and has his average up to .284.

Felix Hernandez and Seattle went to Boston and up-staged Daisuke Matsuzaka’s Boston debut.  King Felix threw a one hit shutout.  He struck out six.  He throwing his fastball 93-99, his slider was 91-92, and a knee-buckling curveball 85-86.  Hernandez was totally dominant.

Mike Mussina left his game with a strained left hamstring.

Former Cardinal and folk hero, Al Reyes, picked up his second save of the year. 

Reds’ rookie Josh Hamilton hit a HR in his second consecutive game.
