Bonds moves closer at the Cards’ expense

Bonds moves closer to the homerun record after tying the game on a long ball off of Ryan Franklin in the eighth.  The Cardinals’ were in control after a 4 run top of the third put them up 4 to 1. Part of the scoring was on a 2 run HR by Albert.  But Keisler gave up a run in the bottom of the third as well as the next two innings to make the score 4 all after the fifth.  The Cardinals got another run in the seventh to go up 5 to 4 and that is when Bonds tied it in the eighth.  Neither team scored in the ninth to go to extra innings and Josh Hancock gave up the winning run in the bottom of the 12th.  Hancock gets the loss and now is 0-1 with an ERA over 6.  It was the first run Franklin had allowed after pitching six shutout innings to start the year.  Keisler gave up 4 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings.  Pujols had three hits on the night.  Old friend Matty Mo gave up 5 runs on 6 hits in 6.2 innings. 

The Cards are back in action this afternoon at 2:35.  Kip Wells takes on LHP Noah Lowry.  The Cardinals have had their struggles against lefties dating back to last year.

Memphis fell to New Orleans (Mets) 7 to 6.  Rick Ankiel hit his fifth HR on the season and had 2 more RBIs but is still only hitting .191.  Ryan Ludwick had three hits including his second HR for the Redbirds.  Edgar Gonzalez continues to hit as he added two hits.  Chris Narveson got the loss as he gave up 6 runs in 6 innings.  He did have 9 K’s.  Former Cardinal Jorge Sosa got the win for New Orleans, striking out 7 in 6 innings of work.

Springfield had the day off.  They return to action today vs. Tulsa (Colorado).

Palm Beach rallied with 3 runs in the ninth to beat St. Lucie (Mets) 6 to 5.  Shane Robinson, Nathan Southard, and Ian Church each had two hits.  Dan Nelson had another hit and is now hitting .361.  Trey Hearne was shaky giving up 5 runs on 10 hits pushing his ERA up to 6.46.  The bullpen pitched 4 shutout innings, giving up only 3 hits.  Jason Motte pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his second save.

The Swing fell to Dayton (Cincinnati) 5 to 2.  Mark Shorey and Christian Lopez each had 2 hits.  Lopez is hitting .440 in 25 ABs.  Isa Garcia added a hit and is batting .342. 

Blake Dewitt went hitless in 3 ABs for the Inland Empire.  He is now batting .222.

Highlights around MLB:

St. Charles native Mark Buerhle pitched a no hitter vs. Texas.  He walked Sammy Sosa in the fifth and then picked him off. 

Brandon Webb struckout 13 in 8 innings for the Diamondbacks.

Claudio Vargas struckout 11 in 6 innings for the Brewers.

Brian Giles had 4 hits for the Padres.

Jason Bay was 3 for 3 with a solo HR for the Pirates.

Carlos Zambrano gave up 5 runs in 6 innings and now has an ERA of 7.77.

Arod hit HR number 9.

Jim Thome hit 2 HRs for the White Sox.

Josh Hamilton hit his fourth HR in only 26 ABs.  He is now hitting .306.

Southeast traveled to SIU and got the win 9 to 7.  Mizzou beat Missouri St. 3 to 1.
