Nice Start in Chicago

The Cardinals started off their series in Chicago on a positive note, beating the Cubs 2-1.  Remember this team got swept three times in Chicago last year, twice by the Cubs and once by the White Sox.  Braden Looper continued to impress picking up his third win vs. only one loss.  Looper went 7 innings, giving up only 1 run on 5 hits, striking out 5.  Izzy picked his fourth save.  Preston Wilson hit a 2 run HR in the seventh for the win.  Rick Hummel talks about the strange plays in his article today.

Memphis fell again to New Orleans (Mets), 3-2.  Ryan Ludwick had a hit and is now hitting .322.  See this post for more about Ludwick.  Ankiel went 0-3 but added another RBI.  Blake Hawksworth got the loss, giving up 3 runs in 5.1 innings of work.  He struck out 6, but gave up 5 hits and 4 BB.  Dennis Dove pitched 1.2 hitless innings, striking out 3. 

Springfield shutout Tulsa (Colorado), 7-0.  Hot hitting Joe Mather added two more hits, including a HR and is now hitting .357.  Bryan Anderson hit his first HR of the year and is hitting .324.  Jarret Hoffpauir hit a two run shot, and is hitting .323.  Mitch Boggs bounced back from two rough outings, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up only 3 hits, striking out 5, but he did walk 4.  The bullpen gave up no hits and only one walk in 3.2 innings.  Chris Perez pitched a perfect inning, striking out 1.

Palm Beach shutout Brevard County (Milwaukee), 5-0. Gary Daley pitched 7 innings, giving up 4 hits, and striking out 3.  He has yet to give up a run in 11.2 innings pitched. Luke Gregerson pitched 2 hitless innings, walking 1 and striking out 1.  Newly promoted Isa Garcia went 1-3 with an RBI in his High A debut.  Allen Craig continued his hot hitting, going 2-2 with an RBI, and is hitting .346.  Nathan Southard, Brandon Yarbrough, and Jose Martinez all had 2 hits.  Daley, Craig, Gregerson, Garcia, Southard were all 2006 draft picks.

Quad Cities fell to Dayton(Cincinnati), 9-5.  Brandon Buckman had another hit and RBI.  Omar Falcon had a two run HR.  Jaime Landin and Jared Schweitzer each had 2 hits.  Elvis Hernandez was shaky after three impressive outings.  Elvis gave up 4 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings.  He struckout none.  P.J. Walters was worse giving up 5 runs on 5 hits in 1.2 innings.  Kyle Mura pitched 1.1 innings, striking out 3.  He is the son of former St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Steve Mura.

Vanderbilt’s ace David Price was extremely impressive last night.  He had a perfect game going into the seventh, and ended up going eight innings, giving up 5 hits, and striking out 14.  Vandy won the game 3-1.  Extra seating had to be added due to the number of MLB scouts on hand.

Southeast plays a double header at Austin Peay starting at 1 PM today.  Mizzou beat Baylor on Friday 11-4.  Jacob Priday had 3 hits, 2 RBIs, and scored 2 runs.
