Bronson Arroyo needs a haircut

The Cardinals got 4 in the eighth to beat the Reds 5-2.  Randy Flores got the win and Izzy got the save.  Braden Looper continues to impress, going seven innings, giving up 3 hits, and striking out 4.  His only mistake was the bomb he gave up to Josh Hamilton.  And honestly, it wasn’t that bad of a pitch.  Albert had 2 RBIs and Duncan had 2 hits.  Cards play a day game on Wednesday.  Randy Keisler will match up against Kyle Lohse at 12:10.

Memphis had an off day.  The Redbirds host the Iowa Cubs for four games starting on Thursday.

Springfield beat Wichita (Kansas City) 4-3 with Jon Jay singling in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.  Juan E. went 1-5 in his rehab assignment.  Jon Jay had 2 hits.  He has really been struggling and is hitting only .206.  Tyler Greene also had 2 hits bringing his average up to a paltry .216.  Juan Richardson and Jarrett Hoffpauir each had a solo HR.  Hoffpauir added another hit and is now batting .326.  Eric Haberer gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks in 5.1 innings.  Chris Perez picked up his first victory of the season, striking out 1 in a perfect ninth.

Palm Beach fell to Daytona (Cubs) 7-2.  Mark Hamilton had 2 hits and an RBI.  Danilo Sanchez had a solo shot to account for the Cards’ other run.  Adam Daniels followed a strong outing with a very shaky one tonight.  He gave up 5 runs, 3 earned,  on 6 hits in 5 innings of work.  Jon Mikrut also got roughed up, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits in his only inning.

The Swing of the Quad Cities were off and will travel to Burlington to take on the Bees (Kansas City) starting Thursday.

Sikeston’s J.R. Bizzell is putting together a solid season at Rhodes College in Memphis.  He is hitting .377/.467/.500.  He has 2 HRs, 28 RBIs, and 10 steals in 38 games primarily playing shortstop and leading off.  Rhodes will take on Southwestern University in the first round of the SCAC baseball championship on Friday in Georgetown, TX.

Sikeston’s Blake Dewitt went 0-4 on Wednesday night. He goes 3-5 in the leadoff spot on Sunday and he has not batted there since.

Southeast got hammered by Memphis 19-8.  The Redhawks host Eastern Illinois on Saturday for a doubleheader.

Mizzou got rained out.

I went to Jackson, TN on Wednesday to watch the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx (Seattle) host the Jacksonville Suns (Dodgers).  It was a shootout as the Diamond Jaxx held of a late rally by the Suns to win 13-12.  By far the most impressive player I saw play was Matt Tuiasosopo who went 5-5 with a HR, 3 RBIs, and 4 runs scored.  The game featured 30 hits and 11 BBs as both teams’ pitchers struggled with command, especially West Tennessee.  More on this game later.
