Cards fall short

The Cardinals fell in the first game of their weekend series with the Cubs 5-3.  Anthony Reyes, who had reallly struggled early in his previous starts, was lights out in the first, striking out the side.  But the Cubs put up 4 in the fourth off Reyes who fell to 0-4 with a 5.73 ERA.  How can this be the same guy that dominated the Tigers in Game 1 of the World Series?  Yadi hit a 2 run shot to make it 4-3 but that is the closest the Cards got.  Former Cardinal Jason Marquis got the win, making him 2-0 vs. his former team already.

Memphis beat Iowa (Cubs) 6-5.  Ryan Ludwick hit a grand slam to lead the Memphis attack.  Tagg Bozied continued his hot streak going 3-4 with 3 doubles.  Troy Cate made his first start of the year and gave up 3 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings.  Brian Falkenborg picked up the 2 inning save, his sixth save of the season.

Springfield beat Tulsa, 2-1 in a game in which the Sprinfield bullpen shined.  Starter Cory Rauschenberger pitched only 1 inning due to a lengthy rain delay.  The bullpen combined to pitch 8 innings giving up only 6 hits and striking out 7.  Chris Perez got the save pitching a scoreless ninth, but he did walk the bases loaded.  Jon Jay, Colby Rasmus, and Juan E. all went 1-4.  Joe Mather was hitless but Bryan Anderson went 2-3 raising his average to .340.  Here is a nice article about Springfield pitcher Chris Lambert.

Palm Beach got thumped by Vero Beach, 11-3.  Tyler Norrick had his worst outing of the season giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 BBs in 3.2 innings.  The bullpen was just as bad.  A.J. Van Slyke, Brandon Yarbrough, and Nathan Southard all had 2 hits.  Shane Robinson hit his first HR of the year.

The Swing beat Burlington 5-3.  Brandon Buckman was 1-3 with an RBI pushing his average to .310.  Luke Gorsett went 2-4 with an RBI.  Kenny Maiques picked up his fourth save and Shaun Garceau picked up the win, pitching 3 innings in relief.

Blake Dewitt went 0-4 and is hitting .205.

J.R. Bizzell went 3-5 with 2 runs scored to help Rhodes College defeat Southwestern University in the first round of the SCAC Championship Tournament.  Rhodes will play Austin at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon.

Jacob Priday hit his third homer of the season to help Mizzou top Texas Tech, 10-4.
