The Cardinals got thumped by the Cubs 8-1. The only positive for the Cards was Pujols hit a big bomb. Wainwright was shaky again giving up six runs in 4.1 innings. His ERA is now over 6. Kip Wells takes on Rich Hill on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.
Seems Bernie is having the same thoughts I have been having. Why not bring up Ryan Ludwick? He is hitting .353/.379/.671 with 7 HRs and 29 RBIs in 85 ABs. One of the biggest knocks against Ludwick has always been he strikes out too much, but so far he has 15 strikeouts or 18% of the time, which a big improvement. I did a post awhile back about Ludwick’s career. Preston Wilson is hitting .203/.242/.305. He has struckout 17 times in 59 ABs or 29% of the time. Skip Schumaker is hitting .219/.235/.281 and thats after having a 3 hit game recently. JuanE. is batting .095 at Double A. Is Ludwick the long term solution? Probably not. But I don’t see how he could be much worse than what the Cards are running out there now.
Memphis held off a late rally to beat Iowa (Cubs), 11-7. Ryan Ludwick had 2 hits including his seventh HR and 5 RBIs. He has hit in 12 straight games and is hitting .353 overall. He should be in St. Louis. John Nelson and Ryan Christianson each added solo shots. Brenden Ryan and Edgar Gonzalez each had 3 hits, 2 runs scored, and an RBI. Mike Smith got the win but was less than spectacular going 6.1 innings and giving up 5 runs on 10 hits. Dennis Dove pitched a scoreless ninth to lower his ERA to 3.
Springfield got doubled up by Tulsa (Colorado), 10-5. It featured a matchup of Top 100 pitching prospects, Jaime Garcia vs. Franklin Morales. Neither factored in the decision. Jaime Garcia was less than stellar giving up 3 runs in 5 innings but did strikeout 8. JuanE.’s rehab is not going to well as he went 0-4 and is hitting .095. Mike McCoy, Tyler Greene, and Sean Danielson each had to hits for Springfield. McCoy had 3 RBIs. Joe Mather had an off game, going 0-4 with 3 Ks. Springfield did not help its cause much, committing 4 errors.
Palm Beach doubled up Vero Beach (Tampa Bay), 8-4. Allen Craig went 3-4 including a solo shot. Mark Hamilton had a 2-run jack but is hitting .200. Nathan Southard and Danilo Sanchez each added HRs. Adam Ottavino gave up 3 runs in 4.1 but did strikeout 8. Luke Gregorson and Jason Motte each pitched a perfect inning and had a K.
The Swing rallied with 4 runs in the bottom of the eighth to top Burlington (Kansas City), 10-9. The Swing pounded out 17 hits including 3 hit games from James Rapoport, Christian Lopez, Mark Shorey, and Daryl Jones. Shorey hit his third HR of the year. Brandon Dickson notched his fourth win in relief, going 4 innings and giving up only 1 run. Kenny Maiques picked up his fifth save pitching a perfect ninth.
Sikeston’s Blake Dewitt went 2-4 and scored to run in an Inland Empire victory.
Sikeston’s J.R. Bizzell went 4-5 with 3 RBIs and 1-4 in the second game on Saturday of the SCAC Championship Tournament. Rhodes College did fall in both games and are now eliminated.
Mizzou won its 30th game of the season behind Jacob Priday. Priday went 2-4 with 3 RBIs. After struggling early on, the junior is really heating up during the right time of the season.
Southeast splits its doubleheader with Eastern Illinois. The rubber game will be Sunday at 1.
