Off day, but a sad day

Cardinals were off today, but did travel to Mississippi to attend Josh Hancock’s memorial service.  Here is a link to highlights from the service. They host Houston Friday night.

Memphis got 2 in the top of the first but failed to score again, falling to Omaha (Kansas City), 7-2.  Brendan Ryan was the only Redbird with multiple hits.  Ankiel went 1-3 to get his average up to .266.  Randy Keisler gave up 6 runs on 9 hits in 6.1 innings.

In Game 1 of a doubleheader, Springfield topped Wichita (Kansas City), 7-5, beating last year’s Number 1 overall pick, Luke Hochevar.  Jon Jay went 2-5 and 2 RBIs to push his average up to .231.  Colby Rasmus hit his third HR of the season, a solo shot.  Joe Mather had 2 hits, including his eleventh HR.  JuanEnc. went 0-3 dropping his average to .091.  Juan Richardson, Juan Lucena, and Tyler Greene each added 2 hits.  Cory Rauschenberger got the win, going 5 innings and giving up 4 runs on 5 hits.  Chris Perez picked up his fifth save, pitching 1.1 innings and striking out 3.

In Game 2, Springfield rallied with 4 in the fifth to tie the game, 5-5, but fell to Wichita, 6-5.  Rasmus went 3-4 with another HR and pushed his average to .273.  Richardson added another 2 hits to push his average to .274.  A week ago, Rasmus was hitting around .200.  Jon Jay had a hit and 2 RBIs.  Kevin Ool gave up 5 runs only 2 earned in 4.1 innings.  Matt Scherer got the loss surrendering a run in the bottom of the seventh (Both games were only seven innings).

Palm Beach Brevard County (Milwaukee)  .  Adam Ottavino gave up 1 run on 4 hits in 5 innings and struckout 6.  Scott Vander Weg pitched 3 scoreless innings giving up only 1 BB.  Zachary Zuercher pitched a perfect ninth.  Allan Craig was 1-1 with 4 BBs.  Mark Hamilton collected 2 hits to push his average up to .246.

The Swing shut out Great Lakes (Dodgers), 3-0 .  P.J. Walters had a strong outing, going 5 scoreless innings and striking out 7. Elvis Hernandez pitched 3 innings, striking out 5, but he did walk 3.  Kenny Maiques picked up his sixth save, pitching a perfect ninth.  Brandon Buckman hit his sixth HR, a 2 run shot.  Christian Reyes collected another 2 hits and is now batting .545 since being promoted.  You know things are going good when you do go 2-4 and your average drops as he was hitting .571 in 7 ABs.

The A’s made 2 more trades today, getting Chris Snelling and Jack Cust.  The A’s have been injuy prone but Billy Beane has been very trying to fill the holes.  The A’s have now acquired Ryan Langerhans, Chris Denorfia, Snelling for Ryan Langerhans, and Cust without giving up any major parts of the organization’s future.  It could be argued he hasn’t given up much at all.  Cash and players to named later.  Where has Walt been?
