Thompson shines

IThe Cardinals put 4 on the board in the seventh to beat Colorado, 4-1.  Scott Spiezio got the inning going with a pinch hit 2 run double.  Adam Kennedy followed with another 2 run hit.  Ryan Franklin and Jason Isringhausen, the 2 real consistent players on this team so far, shut down the eighth and ninth to get the victory.  It was Izzy’s ninth save.  LaRussa shuffled the lineup, putting Ludwick in the second spot and hitting Duncan ninth.  Ludwick had a hit and scorched another ball that was caught.  Duncan went 0-3.  Kelvin Jimenez collected his first major league victory in relief. Jim Edmonds had a big night going 3-4.

In only his second Major League start, Brad Thompson exceeded expectations with a solid performance.  Thompson got through 5 innings, giving up only 1 run, a solo shot to Cardinal killer Matt Holiday, and 6 hits on only 78 pitches.  He had the sinker working and let his defense do the work. 

Chris Carpenter had surgery on Tuesday to remove the bone chips around his right elbow. 

Memphis fell to Salt Lake (Angels), 7-3.  JRod is heating up, going 3-4 to push his average up to .257.  He was under .200 a week ago.  Edgar V. Gonazalez was 3-4 with 2 runs scored.  Rick Ankiel had a double in 4 at bats.  Randy Keisler went the distance giving up 7 runs on 11 hits and striking out 3.  Former Cardinal farmhand Terry Evans, traded by the Cardinals for Jeff Weaver, was 0-4 and is hitting .286 with 4 HRs on the year.

Springfield doubled up Arkansas (Angels), 4-2.  Cory Rauschenberger had his best start of the season, going 6.2 innings, giving up 2 runs, both on solo shots, 3 hits and striking out 5.  Jason Motte recorded his first Double A save, pitching 1.1 perfect innings.  Juan Lucena has another nice game going 2-4.  Juan Enc., Joe Mather, Matt Pagnozzi, and Mike McCoy each had a hit and an RBI.

Palm Beach got 2 in the seventh to beat Sarasota (Reds), 3-1.  Mark Hamilton went 3-4 with and RBI and a run scored.  Allen Craig went 0-4 with 2 Ks.  Isa Garcia went 2-3 but has struggled since his promotion, batting only .205. Brandon Yarbrough had a hit and an RBI and is hitting .313.  Adam Ottavino was solid going 6.2 innings, giving up only 1 run on 6 hits and striking out 6.  Zachary Zuercher got the win in relief.  Luke Gregerson notched his third save with 2 Ks in a perfect ninth.

Quad Cities scored five in the third to top Lansing (Blue Jays), 7-4.  Brandon Buckman was 2-4 with a HR, a 3-run shot.  Luke Gorsett and Christian Lopez each had 2 hits.  Chris Grossman had a hit and 2 RBIs.  Elvis Hernandez gave up 2 runs in the first and then settled down to pitch 3 more scoreless innigs.  His final line was 2 runs on 3 hits, 5 Ks in 3.2 innings.  P.J. Walters got the win allowing only 1 hit and striking out 5 in 4 innings.

Blake Dewitt was 1-5 and is hitting .211.

    Went to the game, I liked the shuffled batting lineup Larussa used last night. Coming out of the bullpin to starting spot…Thompson was solid…impressive (minus the Holiday solo shot) The Cards rallied good, and it was an all around great game to see.

    Everyone should BOOKMARK this site.
