Lots of Cardinal Minor League News

Several Cardinal farmhands have been honored of late.  First of, P.J. Walters and Colby Rasmus were honored as the Cardinals’ system’s May pitcher and hitter of the month, respectively.  1B Brandon Buckman and SS Christian Lopez were named starters for the Western Division in the upcoming Midwest League All-Star Game.  Pitchers P.J. Walters, Brandon Dickson, Elvis Hernandez, and Kenny Maiques were also named to the team.  Colby Rasmus was named the Texas League’s Batter of the Week for the week ending June 3.  Three Cardinal minor leaguers were on Baseball America’s Prospect Hot Sheet.  Colby Rasmus just missed the Top 10 coming in at 11.  What was surprising is that another Cardinal farmhand rated higher on the list.  The Swing’s Shaun Garceau was ranked number 10 for the week.  On the helium watch is the Swing’s Tyler Herron.

Some good stuff about other Cardinal minor leaguers.  VEB has an interview with Memphis’ Blake Hawksworth and Palm Beach’s Adam Ottavino.  Ottavino has some interesting tidbits on organization philosophy concerning the 2-seam fastball.  Derrick Goold has an article about the Swing’s Daryl Jones.  Drafted in the 3rd round of 2005 on athleticism, he so far has been slow to evolve.  When I saw him in person, he looked lost at the plate.

The Quad Cities thumped Wisconsin (Mariners), 13-5 in Game 1 of a doubleheader.  Brandon Buckman was 3-4 with his 13th HR of the season, a solo shot.  Luke Gorsett was 2-3, including a 3-run HR.  Donovan Sandoval hit a 2-run blast.  Jaime Landin and Jared Schweitzer had 2 hits each.  Elvis Hernandez got the start and was solid.  He gave up 1 run on 2 hits and 2 BBs with 5 Ks in 4 innings.  P.J. Walters got the victory but was shaky.  He gave up 3 runs on 3 hits including a HR in only 2 innings of work.

In Game 2, the Swing won 3-2.  In this game, the pitching was the story.  Brad Furnish gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 BBs with 9 Ks in 4 innings.  Tyler Herron gave up only 1 hit with 6 Ks in 3 innings.  Brandon Buckman and Chris Grossman each had 2 hits and an RBI.

Palm Beach was blanked by Clearwater (Phillies), 8-0.  Nathan Southard and Jim Rapoport each had 2 hits.  Adam Ottavino gave up 3 runs on 7 hits and 4 BBs with 6 Ks in 5 innings.  Matt Trent gave up 5 runs on 5 hits in 1 inning of work.

Springfield beat Tulsa (Rockies), 5-4.  Joe Mather had a huge night going 2-3 with 5 RBIs including a 3-run shot.  Colby Rasmus was 1-4.  Jarrett Hoffpauir was 2-4.  Mitch Boggs had a nice night, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings of work.  Chris Perez got save number 13, but he did make things interesting, giving up a 2 run HR in the ninth.

Memphis got doubled up by Las Vegas (Dodgers), 4-2.  Tagg Bozied and Ryan Christianson each had a hit and an RBI.  Mike Parisi gave up 4 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings of work.  Mark Worrell gave up a hit and struck out 3 in 2 innings.

Blake Dewitt went 1-2 with 2 RBIs and 3 BBs.

Mark Mulder threw off the mound Tuesday at Busch Stadium as he continues his rehab work.

So Taguchi had a hit in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Cards to victory, 4-3, over the Reds.
