Odd game in the Gulf Coast League

The Cardinals made a whole bunch of roster moves on Thursday.  

  •  David Eckstein was activated from the DL.

  • Todd Wellemeyer was put on the DL with a  sprained right elbow.

  • Brendan Ryan was sent back down to Memphis.

  • Andy Cavazos was called back up to replace Wellemeyer.

  • Memphis’ Ryan Christiansen was placed on the DL.

  • Matt Pagnozzi was promoted to replace Christiansen.

  • Springfield released Kevin Ool.

  • Chris Russ was sent from Memphis back to Springfield.

  • Henry Guerrerro was promoted to Springfield from Palm Beach to fill the spot of Pagnozzi.   

  • Luke Gorsett and Chris Grossman were promoted from the Quad Cities to Palm Beach.

  • 2007 picks Antonio DeJesus (16th round) , Arnoldi Cruz (25th round), and Nick Derba (30th round) were promoted to the Quad Cities.  This is Cruz’ third promotion as he started in the GCL and then Johnson City, and most recently he played for Batavia. 

Memphis 1 Nashville (Brewers) 7

Randy Keisler gave up 3 runs on 3 hits with 6 Ks in 6 IP.  Hugo Castellanos and Kelvin Jimenez gave up 2 runs a piece in relief.  Jarrett Hoffpauir was 0-3 but is still hitting .400.  Rick Ankiel had a double. 

Springfield 6 Wichita (Royals) 3

Mitch Boggs gave up 2 runs on 4 hits with 5 Ks in 6 innings while picking up the win.  Chris Perez was removed after walking 3 in 0.2 innings.  Jason Motte picked up the save by recording the final out.  Mark Hamilton had a 3 hits including a 3-run HR.  Colby Rasmus was 1-5 with 2 Ks.  Sean Danielson, Mark Shorey, Juan Richardson, and Bryan Anderson all had 2 hits a piece. 

Palm Beach 6  Clearwater (Phillies)  7

Adam Ottavino was 4-0 with a 0.67 ERA in his last 4 starts going into Thursday’s action.  Well Ottavino was roughed up for 4 runs on 7 hits and 4 BBs in only 5.1 innings. Isa Garcia continues to rake with 2 hits.  Jim Rapoport had 2 hits including a triple and 2 RBIs.

Quad Cities 8 Peoria (Cubs) 5

Tyler Herron was roughed up for 5 runs on 9 hits in 5.2 innings.  The bullpen pitched 3.1 perfect innigs with Kenny Maiques picking up save number 20.  Jared Schweitzer had a huge night going 4-4.  Jaime Landin had 2 RBIs. 

Batavia 5 Lowell (Red Sox) 4

Mateo Marquez had 2 hits and 3 RBIs.  Andrew Brown, David Carpenter, and Ross Oeder each had 2 hits. 

Johnson City 4 Danville (Braves) 3

Mike Folli had 2 hits and an RBI.  Last week’s Appy Pitcher of the Week Nicholas Addition was roughed up for 3 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings. 

GCL Cardinals 1 GCL Mets 0 in 17 innings

In one of the oddest games I can recall, the Mets no hit the Cardinals for 14 innings before losing in 17 innings.  The game was started on July 7 but was delayed by rain.

Jairo Martinez had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.  Martinez is now batting .324.  Romulo Ruiz had 2 RBIs.  Reynier Gonzalez gave up his first run in 5 games.  Gonzalez gave up a run on 4 hits in 4 IP.  Carlos Gonzalez gave up 1 run on 2 hits and struckout 4. 

Blake Dewitt had another nice night with 2 hits and 2 RBIs for Double A Jacksonville.
