Brad Furnish was drafted in the second round (54th overall) during the 2006 First Year Player Draft out of Texas Christian University. Born in Lucas, Texas, Furnish, stands 6’2 and throws left. He is a switch hitter.
After signing for $600,000, Furnish was assigned to the State College Spikes of the NY Penn League. Furnish’s had an up and down rookie professional season, going 3-6 in spite of a 3.94 ERA in 15 starts. Furnish had 68 Ks and allowed 5 HRs in 75.1 innings. Furnish had a stretch in August of striking out 27 hitters in 19 innings over 3 starts. Going into the 2007 season, Furnish was ranked as the 23rd best prospect in the Cardinals’ system.
At the beginning of the 2007 season, Furnish was assigned to the Swing of the Quad Cities of the Midwest League. So far in 2007, Furnish is 3-3 with an impressive 2.42 ERA in 81.2 innings. Opponents are hitting only .191 against him to go along with 76 Ks. In July, he has an ERA of just over 1. His 2.42 ERA is fifth best in the MWL.
Furnish is a polished lefty who can dominate at times despite of what scouts consider average stuff. His fastball sits 88-91 and has a solid curveball. He gets good extension in his delivery (see the photo above) and has good control of both pitches. His changeup is a work in progress. He has flyball tendencies and can get hurt by the HR ball if his command is lacking.
In 2006, Furnish threw the eighth no-hitter in TCU history as he topped Stephen F. Austin. In seven innings, Furnish fanned a career-high 13 batters. For his efforts, he was named National Pitcher of the Week as well as MWC Pitcher of the Week. He was also an all-tournament team member. He finished the season 8-6 with three saves to go along with a 4.32 ERA in 20 appearances. He made 16 starts and completed two games. He tossed 100 innings and led the team with 125 strikeouts. Opponents hit just .249 off of the lefty.
In the summer of 2005, Furnish played for the Cape Cod League’s Wareham Gatemen. He finished the season with a 3.34 ERA in 32.1 innings spanning six starts, striking out 28 batters while walking 16 and holding opponents to a .228 batting average.
As a sophmore in 2005, Furnish made 20 appearances for the Frogs, including 14 starts. He compiled a 5-6 record to go along with a 4.14 ERA and ranked third on the team with 91.1 innings pitched and 79 strikeouts.
At TCU, he tossed 225 innings in his collegiate career and finished with an ERA of 4.16 in 56 appearances making 34 starts. In those 225 innings, Furnish struck out 230 batters and walked just 112. He finished with a 16-12 record to go along with four saves.
Furnish transferred to TCU after a year at Nebraska.
Furnish projects as a back of the rotation lefty.
