Cardinals shutout

The Cardinals fall to the Marlins, 4-0.  No Cardinal hitter had more than one hit.  Brad Thompson was decent and gets credited with a quality start.  How do you call a performance where you give up more hits than innings quality?

Memphis 7 Oklahoma (Rangers) 1

Jolbert Cabrera was the only Redbird with more than 1 hit.  Randy Keisler gave up 6 runs in 7 innings.

Springfield 4 Tulsa (Rockies) 5

Mitch Boggs gave up 5 in 5 innings.  Nick Webber struckout 4 in 2 innings.  Colby Rasmus was back in the lineup and went 0-4 with 2 Ks.  Mark Shorey had 3 hits and an RBI.  Jose Martinez and Casey Rowlett each had 2 hits.

Palm Beach 4 Lakeland (Tigers) 3

Adam Ottavino gave up 3 runs (2 earned) in 5 innings.  Jon Mikrut pitched 2 scoreless innings.

Quad Cities 13 Great Lakes (Dodgers) 7

The new guys from the June draft are still red hot.  Steve Hill had 3 hits and is now hitting .344.  Tony Cruz had 2 hits and is hitting .438.  Antone DeJesus was 4-6 and is now hitting .500.  Nick Derba had 2 hits to raise his average to .600.  Christain Reyes had 4 hits including his 9th HR.

Batavia 4 Tri City (Astros) 8

Clayton Long was rocked for 6 runs in only 2 innings.  Andrew Brown and William Groff each had 2 hits.

Johnson City 2 Kingsport (Mets) 4

Jose Arredondo was superb, pitching 5 scoreless, allowing only a hit and striking out 4.  Going into the ninth, Kingsport had only 1 hit.  Johnson City got 3 in the top of the ninth.  Beau Riportella had 2 more hits to push his average up to .375.  Hey Lunhow, promote him already.  Casey Mulligan and Nick Vera also chipped in 2 hits.

GCL Cardinals 5 GCL Mets 9

A rehabbing Gary Daley gave up 4 runs in 1.2 innings.  D’Marcus Ingram had 3 hits.  Guillermo Toribio and Jairo Martinez each had 2 hits.

News about former Southeast standout Justin Christian, from BA:  Justin Christian was struggling to a season to forget at Double-A Trenton. But despite a .235 batting average, the Yankees promoted Christian to Triple-A Scranton in June. It’s made all the difference in the world as Christian has hit .340/.380/.489 with 11 steals in 11 attempts in 21 games. Christian had two hits including a home run and stole a base as Scranton beat Indianapolis 8-5 on Monday.

Blake Dewitt was 1-4 and definitely had a heavy heart.  His Grandmother died earlier in the evening.  Our condolensces go out to the whole Bizzell family.

Jerry Crasnick’s lastest column at ESPN.com really rips the Cardinals.  I hope Dewitt reads this and realizes how a lot of Cardinal fans feel.

The Missouri Department of Economic Development recommended the State kick in about $27 million to the ballpark village.  Maybe the concept will be complete by the time the 2009 All-Star Game comes to town.
