That was hard to watch. This team came out with no fire and just went through the motions. I know they are professionals, but it looked like to me the manager didn’t have them ready to play. He must be too worried about picking fights with the media.
If the Cardinals were unsure if they were going to be buyers or sellers, I believe it is very obvious now. The Brewers gave up their second best pitching prospect, Will Inman, and 2 other pitching prospects for a marginal reliever, Scott Linebrink, who the Padres had stopped using in the eighth. And to make Linebrink even less attractive, he is a free agent at the end of the year. What could a lights out closer like Izzy bring?
It seems most teams in the race are looking for bullpen help and the Cardinals should sell from their most attractive position. Russ Springer, Izzy, and possibly Troy Percival could all bring in some decent young players. JuanEnc. could be dealt for a team looking for a little more offense. He would seem to fit with the Angels as a possible platoon with an oft injured Garrett Anderson. Ryan Ludwick could possibly be dealt to a team looking for a little right handed pop off the bench. He has been a fine pinch hitter this season. Even though Looper has struggled of late, he could be dealt for some young prospects. Even 7 run Kip, losing record and all, would be of some interest for a contender needing a back of the rotation starter.
There has been a lot of controversy over a piece Bernie wrote on Sunday. Here is his follow up from today. The most interesting clip: “DeWitt explained that some players have actually requested surgery as a first option, but the team convinced them that a methodical rehab was the better alternative. And, DeWitt said, those players eventually healed without requiring surgery.” So it seems the Cardinals are even conservative in their injurie issues.

Blake Dewitt was 1-3 with a walk. He is now batting .366 and has a hit in 10 of the 11 games since his promotion. Blake’s first Double A HR was the lead update on Baseball America’s Prospect Report on Wednesday. I posted a link over on the right under Minor League interests for Jacksonville.com that will have all of the Suns’ game recaps. One more thing, in case you are interested, Jacksonville plays in a really nice ballpark. Click here to look at some really great photos of the park.
