The Cardinals sweep the Brewers, unbelievable.  I really can’t believe it.  Who is this team anyway?  Just when I thought this team was down and out after that 1-5 road trip to Pittsburgh and Washington, they turn it around and are now 2.5 games out going into Chicago.

Mark Mulder made his first rehab start and though he struggled, at least he is back on the bump.  Steve Hill still continues to rake.  Colby and the boys were rained out and Memphis continues to struggle.

Baseball America had its winners and losers from the draft.  One of the losers?  I know what you are thinking, the Cardinals.  No, Kyle Russell. From BA:  Russell, a fourth-round pick of the Cardinals, is a Texas outfielder who at least has the advantage of heading into his junior season, but he’ll be hard-pressed to do better than the Longhorns-record 28 homers he hit this spring.  Definitely one of the big winners was the Yankees who spent quite a bit but really bolstered their system.

It looks like the Cardinals were able to land forty fifth round pick Jameson Maj before the signing deadline.  Maj finished the season with a 5-3 record and 1.00 ERA to go along with the 20 saves (a Division II record) and 72 strikeouts in 54 innings of work.  He reminds me of Palm Beach closer Luke Gregerson.  In the Texas Collegiate Summer League, Maj had an ERA of 1.88, picked up 4 saves, and had 26 strike outs in 24 innings.

Hopefully the Cardinals can get a deal done with 19th round pick Nick Peoples as he was a senior and has no more eligibility left at the U. of Texas.  According to this he is recovering from a collarbone injury and will be in the instructional league with the Cards this fall.

The Cardinals finished off the sweep with a 8-0 victory over the Brewers.  Wainwright had his second straight outstanding outing with 7 shutout innings while striking out 8.  Yadi was 3-3 including 2 HRs.  Bring on the Cubs!!

 Memphis 1 Oklahoma (Rangers) 5

Randy Keisler gave up 5 runs in 7.1 innings.  Newly acquired Brian Barden had 2 hits and an RBI.  Tagg Bozied and Edgar Gonzalez each had a hit.

Springfield and San Antonio (Padres) were rained out.

Palm Beach 6 Vero Beach (Devil Rays) 8

Mark Mulder made his first start of the season, giving up 4 runs in 1.1 innings.  Brad Furnish gave up 4 runs in 5.2 innings.  Allen Craig and Luke Gorsett each had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.  Nathan Southard had a hit and 2 RBIs.

Quad Cities 7 Kane County (A’s) 1

Shaun Garceau pitched 5 shutout innings.  Steve Hill had 2 hits including a 2-run bomb.  Antone DeJesus hit his first Swing HR.  Tony Cruz had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.  Jaime Landin had a hit and 2 RBIs.

Batavia 0 Auburn (Blue Jays) 1

Tyler Henley was 0-3 but is still batting .311.  Tommy Pham went 3-4.  Tommy Eager gave up 1 run in 4 innings of word.

Johnson City 9 Elizabethton (Twins) 4

Jon Edwards hit a 2 run HR, his second in as many nights.  First rounder Peter Kozma 2 hits including a 3-run HR.  Mike Folli had 2 hits and has really been hot of late.  Travis Mitchell was 3-5 and is on the verge of reaching .300.

GCL Cardinals 2 GCL Mets 9 Game 1

Jairo Martinez tripled and drove in the only 2 runs.  Edgar Lara and Braulio Hiraldo had the other 2 Cardinal hits.  Carlos Gonzalez was saddled with his first loss as he gave up 3 runs in 5 innings.

Game 2 has not been posted yet.  Milb.com gives the GCL Cardinals no love.
