Rain!

Another outstanding pitching performance from an 18 year old draft pick.  Colby really likes hitting leadoff as the Springfield bats erupt.  The Cubs even beat the Cards in the Minors.  And the Swing can win on only 1 hit but lots of speed.

The Cardinals are rained out and will play only 1 on Monday.

Also, from Bernie:  The Cardinals sign Miguel Cairo.  He reports to Memphis on Wednesday…
he was DFAed by the Yankees on Aug 7…
released on Wednesday….
.252 with 10 RBIs in 54 games with Yankees.
.308 OBP … .318 SLG.
seven doubles…
played games at every INF position this year, and a few in the corner OF.
And also: in case you missed it, Kelly Stinnett is back at Memphis, catching, and the Cardinals will likely call him up after Sept. 1 to be the 3rd guy.   I can kind of understand the Stinnett signing.  But why Cairo?  To take playing time away from Hoffpauir at Memphis or to call him up to take playing time from Ryan?

A nice article from Cary Booher about the bad part of baseball, being demoted.  The article centers around Mark Shorey’s recent trip to Palm Beach.  I have seen the guy play a couple of times.  He has a nice short lefty swing and can play the corner outfield spots and first base.   The positive is that he gets more ABs and gets to play everyday.
 Memphis 3 Iowa (Cubs) 6

This team is really bad.  Skip and Jarrett Hoffpauir had the only 2 extra basehits.  Brian Barden had a hit and 2 RBIs.

Springfield 17 Corpus Christi 10

In his last 3 games Colby has hit leadoff and in those games he has started the game with a hit.  Tonight, Rasmus singled and came around to score. He ended the game 4-5 with a 2-run blast and a walk and 4 runs scored.  The HR was his 22nd (a franchise record) and he had his 35th double.  Since being moved to the leadoff spot he is 9-14 with 2 HRs.  Jose Martinez was 5-6 (tying a franchise record) with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored.  Rico Washington has provided a nice spark since returning to Springfield, tonight he was good for 3 hits and 4 RBIs. Reid Gorecki had 2 hits and 2 RBIs while Bryan Anderson had 2 hits and one RBI.  Cody Haerther had a hit, 2 2 walks, 2 runs scored, and 2 runs driven in.  The pitching was as bad as the bats were good. What has happened to Adam Daniels?  After a pretty good start to Double A, he has struggled with 8 straight poor starts.  Tonight’s line; 4 runs, 4 hits, 5 BBs, 0 Ks in 2.1 innings.  Zachary Zuercher gave up 2 in 2.2 innings.   Mike Scherer and Kyle McClellan both gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in 2 innings.  The 17 runs tied a franchise record for most runs in a game.

Palm Beach 0 Daytona (Cubs) 6

Jim Rapoport had 3 singles.  A.J. Van Slyke went 2-3.  There is no other way to put this, but Trey Hearne has really been bad.  He gave up 5 runs in 6 innings and is now 4-11 with a 6.36 ERA.

Quad Cities 2 Burlington (Royals) 1

The Swing put 2 on the board in the top of the ninth thanks to lots of speed.  Antone DeJesus walks and steals second.  Daryl Jones singles to score DeJesus.  Jones advances to second on the throw home.  Is able to make his way to third and scores on a suicide squeeze.  Jones hit in the ninth is the only hit the Swing had.  Clayton Mortenson pitched 5 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits while striking out 4.  Kyle Mura pitched 1.2 shutout innings, striking out 3.  Kenny Maiques pitched a perfect ninth to pick up save number 29.

Batavia 2 Mahoning Valley (Indians) 0

Brian Broderick pitched 4 2-hit innings.  Josh Dew picked up save number 11.  Daniel Descalso collected another 2 hits and is hitting .350 in his last 10 after getting off to a really slow start.  David Carpenter also had 2 hits.

GCL Cardinals 2 GCL Nationals 3

Guillermo Toribio, Carlos Schonenberg, Scott Thomas, and Luis De La Cruz each had 2 hits.  18 year old Ronald Russell pitched a shutout inning, striking out 1.  18 year old Mike Blazek did give up 1 run, but struck out 10 in 5 innings.  I guess he did not want to be outdone by 18 year old Deryk Hooker’s 11 Ks in 4 innings on Friday.  Now we just need to see 18 year old Brett Zawacki’s debut. The great thing about the rain delay is that I was able to watch the Black Crowes on HDNet.  Great show by a great band. Plus, the Cardinals didn’t lose.If Kip Wells and Carlos Zambrano are 2 of the best hitting pitchers, is Rick Ankiel the best pitching outfielder?I have really been trying to say nice things about people.  But would somebody please Fire Joe MorganHave you seen the video of this future football star?  Rumor has it that Pete Carroll is already recruiting him.  Click here and scroll down.BOOKMARK THIS SITE!!
