Cards get lucky

The Cardinals and all but one of  its’ affililiates won at least one game on Tuesday night.  Joey “Bombs” hits a bomb. Springfield wastes a great pitching performance. Mark Mulder looks much better and Kozma likes the 3 hole.

One last item on Kyle Russell.  I spoke to someone who saw Russell at the NBC World Series and he said that he was not impressive at all.  He struggled, showed little wood bat power, and wasn’t pitched any differently than anyone else.  You would think that the reigning NCAA HR champ would get special treatment at the plate.  He also added that it was known that a large Cardinal contigent was there to see Russell and came away more than skeptical on how his power would translate to wood bats.  I was pumped as anyone about the Cardinals drafting Russell but after the numbers he put up during the summer and this on the spot report, maybe the Cardinals did the right thing by not giving him big $$.  I know that it seems the Cardinals wasted a fourth round pick, but maybe it was worth the risk to control his rights during the summer and watching how his play with the wood bats would progress.

Wainwright had another nice outing, he just didn’t get any run support.   The Cardinals were then able to get 4 in the eighth thanks to 2 Florida errors and a Ryan Ludwick pinch hit HR.  Pujols also homered.

I want to mention the bunt play with Marlins’ runners on first and second in the sixth.  Pujols fields the ball and throws to third.  There is no way Eckstein throws the runner out, especially if he has to throw the ball flat footed not even if his life depended on it.  Lights out Izzy got the save.

How good have Izzy and Ryan Franklin been?   The Cardinals are 42-1 this season when leading after six innings.

Todd Wellemeyer will start his rehab at Springfield on Wednesday.

Memphis 3 Iowa (Cubs) 1

Joey “Bombs” Mather hit a 2-run shot with 2 out in the top of the tenth and Chris Perez pitched a shaky bottom of the inning but was able to pick up the save.  Mather was 3-5 for the game.  The HR was his ninth at Memphis and his 27th for the year.  Skip had 2 hits and 2 BBs.  Randy Keisler put together a solid outing, giving up only 1 run on 4 hits and 5 Ks in 7 innings.  Chris Perez walked 2 and struck out 2 to notch his sixth Triple A save and his 33rd save on the year.

Springfield 3 Tulsa (Rockies) 4

P.J. Walters was super, allowing 1 run on 6 hits while striking out 10 in 7 innings of work.  Jason Motte allowed 3 runs including a 2-run HR to blow the save.  Colby Rasmus hit a 2-run HR.  Henry Guerrero had 2 hits including his second HR.

With Sean Danielson out, Colby will bat leadoff the rest of the season.

Palm Beach 3 Vero Beach (Cubs) 1

Mark Mulder’s second rehab start went much better than his first.  This time, Mulder gave up 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 3 and was able to be efficient enough to make it through 4 innings.  Mulder was able to get 5 flyball outs compared to 4 groundouts. Brad Furnish took over and threw 3 no hit innings while striking out 3.  Luke Gregerson picked up his 24th save.  A.J. Van Slyke went 3-4 and is hitting .450 in his last 6 games.  Mark Shorey, Donovan Solano,  and Luke Gorsett each chip in 2 hits.

Quad Cities 4 Clinton (Rangers) 3 Game 1

Tyler Herron was riding a hot streak, 1 loss in his last ten starts, but was shaky tonight.  He gave up 4 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6 in 5 innings.  Nick Derba and Jose Garcia each had 2 hits and Garcia added 2 RBIs.

Quad Cities 0 Clinton (Rangers) 2 Game 2

Tony Cruz and Jose Ramirez had the only 2 Swing hits.  Mike Schellinger got the loss, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings.  Kyle Mura pitched 2 more scoreless innings to drop his ERA to 1.60.

Batavia 6 State College (Pirates) 4

Will Groff and Justin Roberson each had 2 hits.  Tyler Henley had a triple and 3 RBIs.  Blake King gave up 3 runs in 4 innings but walked 0.

Johnson City 4 Bristol (White Sox) 3

Pete Kozma was 2-4 hitting in the 3rd spot in the batting order.  Nick Vera had a hit, walked twice, and had 2 RBIs.

GCL Cardinals 8 GCL Mets 0 Game 1

The Cardinals got started early with 6 in the top of the first.  Hot hitting Scott Thomas was 3-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Juan Cabrera and Edgar Lara each had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.  Carlos Gonzalez gave up 4 hits with 4 Ks in 5 innings.  Gonzalez is now 4-1 with a 2.87 ERA.

GCL Cardinals 4 GCL Mets 1 Game 2

The Cardinals got 3 in the top of the seventh (only a seven inning game) to get the victory.  D’ Marcus Ingram went 3-4.  Jairo Martinez had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.  Pablo Ortiz gave up 1 run on 6 hits in 4 innings.  Rigoberto Lugo got the win while Julio Sanchez picked up his fifth save.

Blake Dewitt went 1-4 on the night with L.A. Dodgers’ owner, Frank McCourt,  in attendance.
