Let’s play catch up

Return of the real Kip Wells?  Mather stays hot.  Edgar Gonzalez is hotter.  Springfield gets wet.   Allen Craig has a nice doubleheader and Elvis continues to struggle.

First off, let me thank the Southern Illinois Miners’ General Manager Tim Arseneau and the rest of the Miners’ staff to their great hospitality on Thursday night.  If you have not been over to Marion to see a Miners’ home game you are missing out.  I would find it hard to believe that one could find a more enthusiastic crowd anywhere in Minor League baseball.

brad.jpg The Cardinals activated Todd Wellemeyer after 1 rough Double A rehab outing and sent Brad Thompson to Memphis.

juan.jpg According to Kary Booher, Juan Richardson thought he was suffering  from shin splints on his left leg during the team’s recent road trip, but now they realize that it is much worse, he has a stress fracture.  With the Texas League Playoffs starting in 13 days, Richardson will be lost for the year.

jess.jpg The Hardball Times’ Carlos Gomez gives his best and worst from this year’s draft.  He rated the Cardinals Peter Kozma as the fouth worst pick.  About the Cardinals overall draft, Gomez says this,”Liked their selection of RHPs Mortensen (36th overall) and Todd (82nd). Can’t overlook their selection of SS Kozma (18th overall) and not signing OF Kyle Russell.”  Photo of Jess Todd pitching at University of Arkansas.

kenny.jpg Just to catch up from Thursday.  Palm Beach’s Eddie Degerman had a career game, with a no hitter into the eighth, allowing only 1 run on 1 hit and striking out 9.  Luke Gregerson picked up save number 25.  Kyle Mura had another shutout outing for the Swing while Kenny Maiques picked up save 30.  Why did the Cardinals choose Chris Lambert in the first round of the 2004 draft?  That draft has to go down as one of the worst in history.  Photo is of Kenny Maiques.

Something that I missed.  The Cardinals sent minor league reliever Matt Trent to the Rockies for future considerations.  Trent was 0-1 with a 3.51 ERA in 25 games for Palm Beach.  In 2006, Trent had a 2.61 ERA with 79 Ks in 69 innings for the Quad Cities.

Check out Erik’s early preview of the Rule 5 draft.

The Cardinals saw the return of the early season Kip Wells and I believe this is the real Kip Wells.  Remember what Yogi Berra said, “Ninety percent of this game is half mental. “Wells gave up 7 in 4 innings.  Smoltz was as good as Kip was bad.  Ankiel didn’t start but did get a pinch hit single.  Duncan seems like he might be awakening from his slumber.  Brendan Ryan continues to impress with good glove work excluding a dropped pop up and a nice strong arm.  Admittedly,  I am not sold that he is an everyday SS, but why not take a chance.  Pay him $400,000 instead of the $5 million Eckstein would get and put that $4.6 million savings in the rotation.

The Cubs win and the Brewers lose so the Cards are 4 behind the Cubs and 1.5 behind the Brewers.

 Memphis 12 Albuquerque (Marlins) 5

Edgar V. Gonzalez went 5-5 with 6 RBIs including a Grand Slam.  Gonzalez is hitting .425 during the month of August.  He might be worth a look as a utility player in 08.  Joey Bombs continues his hot streak with a 3-run HR and had 4 RBIs total.  Jarrett Hoffpauir was 2-4 with 2 runs scored.  Miguel Cairo had 3 more hits to raise his average to .364 since coming back to the Cardinal organization.  Mike Parisi gave up 3 runs on 12 hits in 7.1 innings.

stu.jpg  Palm Beach 2 Jupiter (Marlins) 8 Game 1

Stu Pomerantz had another shaky rehab start, giving up 3 runs in 2 innings.  Rob Ransom was worse, giving up 5 runs in 3 innings.  Allen Craig was 2-3.  Mark Shorey and Luke Gorsett each doubled.

929505.jpg Palm Beach 6 Jupiter (Marlins) 3 Game 2

Brandon Yarbrough led the charge with 2 hits and 3 RBIs.  Dan Nelson had 2 hits and scored 2 runs.  Allen Craig had 2 more hits so he was 4-7 for the doubleheader.  Luke Gorsett also added 2 hits.  Trey Hearne gave up 3 in 4.1 innings.  Donnie Smith picked up the win.  Luke Gregerson notched his 26th save.

elvis.jpg  Quad Cities 0 Grand Rapids (Angels) 9

Elvis Hernandez gave up 4 runs on 5 hits and 2 BBs in 4.1 innings while striking out 7.  Daryl Jones, Christian Reyes, and Tony Cruz had the only 3 Swing hits.  Chuckie Fick gave up 3 in 3.2 innings.

Batavia 1 Mahoning Valley (Indians) 3

Domnit Bolivar and William Groff accounted for the only 2 Muckdog hits.  Thomas Eager gave up 1 run on 4 hits in 5 innings while striking out 7.  Clayton Long gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 BBs in 3 innings to pick up his fifth loss with no wins.

Johnson City 1 Burlington (Royals) 5

Adron Chambers and Osvaldo Morales each had 2 doubles.  Peter Kozma had a double.  Nick Addition had  gave up 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 6 in 4.1 innings.

GCL Cardinals and GCL Nationals were cancelled.

Stay tuned for a major announcement about this site!
