Cards Come Out Flat and Superman is Human

Kip looks terrible and the Cards forget their bats.  Wichita brings kryptonite.   Palm Beach comes back.  The Swing get in a pitchers duel. Jon Edwards provides the fireworks for Batavia and Johnson City finishes its season.

Short post as I had to write a feature for Ballpark Digest.

Rolen did not play tonight and it looks like he could be out the rest of the season due to his bad shoulder.

More attention for Colby Rasmus.  Baseball Prospectus ranked him as the Number 2 Centerfield propect in the Minors.  It rates the Reds’ Jay Bruce as Number 1, but it seems most scouts project Bruce more as a rightfielder.  From BP:  ..Rasmus is a 2005 first-round pick out of high school who has added 20 pounds to his frame since signing. The extra weight has led to a power breakthrough this year, as Rasmus leads the Texas League with 27 home runs….has been one of the hottest bats in the minors this month, hitting .404/.495/.854 with 11 home runs in 24 games. He’s not the overall offensive force that Bruce is, but he’s not that far behind, and he’s also more of a pure center fielder, with excellent range and a very good arm. As great as Rick Ankiel’s story is, Rasmus will play a bigger role in the future of the franchise.

The Brewers beat the Cubs so the Cardinals remain 2 out.

Cardinals 0 Astros 7

Terrible.  The return of the real Kip has taken place as he has his second consecutive rough start.  Your team has 35 more games in 34 days and you go out and lay an egg.  It seems the Cards get back in it, the pressure level goes up, and Kip folds.  I don’t believe Tony and Dave were too happy with him based on their mound visits.  Just think, we have a little over a month left with him.  The only real positive was Jim Edmonds catch.

It is really obvious that Albert is hurting.  Isn’t it worth he to give him a day off or 2 to have him maybe a little healthier during this home stretch it?

Memphis 1 Iowa (Cubs) 3

Skip had 3 hits and scored the only run.  I wonder if he will be there when I visit Memphis on Saturday.  Edgar V. Gonzalez had 2 doubles.  The former top prospect Travis Hanson collected 2 hits.  Joe Mather singled.  Mike Parisi gave up 1 run on 4 hits in 6 innings and was charged with the loss.  Troy Cate gave up another run and was unable to get an out.

Springfield 5 Wichita (Royals) 9

Colby had a hit but did strike out 3 times.  I guess he is human after all.  Cody Haerther hit a 3-run blast.  Allen Craig was better in his second game as he hit his first Double A blast and singled.  After a decent outing last time, Adam Daniels took another step back.  Daniels gave up 6 runs and lasted only 1.2 innings.

Palm Beach 10 Brevard County (Brewers) 7

Eddie Degerman follows his best Palm Beach outing with another bad one.  He gave up 5 runs in 5 innings and put his team in a hole early, giving up 4 in the first but still got the win.  Luke Gregerson notched his 28th save.  The Cardinals got 7 in the fifth to mount a comeback.  The hardly seen Shane Robinson had 2 hits.  Brandon Yarbrough had 3 hits and 3 RBIs.  Mark Shorey collected 2 hits and an RBI.  Dovonan Solano contributed 3 hits.

Quad Cities 0 Burlington (Royals) 1 in 10 innings

A true pitchers duel.  Oliver Marmol had 2 hits.  Christian Lopez and Tony Cruz each singled and that was all the hits the Swing could get.  Elvis Hernandez pitched 3.1 shutout innings.  Chuckie Fick had 4 Ks in 3.2 innings.  Kyle Sadlowski collected 3 Ks in 2 innings.  The newly promoted Matt Spade walked 2 and gave up a hit and never got an out to get his first Midwest League loss.

Batavia State 7 College (Pirates) 6 in 11

Jon Edwards homered in the top of the 11th to give Batavia the lead.  Josh Dew pitched a perfect 11th to get his 14th save and seal the victory.  Blake King gave up 5 in 3.2 innings but only walked 2.  Daniel Descalso got 2 more hits.  Domnit Bolivar had 4 hits to raise his average to .180.

Johnson City 1 Princeton (Devil Rays) 0 Game 1

Johnson City had only 2 hits but managed to get the win.  Only in Rookie ball.  Adron Chambers and Robert Sanzillo each had a hit.  Jose Mateo pitched 6.1 shutout innings.

Johnson City 1 Princeton (Devil Rays) 4 Game 2

This game saw the Cardinals get only 5 hits.  The only run came on an Osvaldo Morales solo HR.  That closes the curtain on another Appy League season for Johnson City.

Blake Dewitt had a hit, 2 walks, and 2 runs scored.
