AFL opens

Cardinal prospects Jarrett Hoffpauir and Jason Motte helped lead the Mesa Solar Sox to victory in the Arizona Fall League opener.  Jarrett Hoffpauir replaced an injured Jed Lowrie in the fifth and the move proved big for the Solar Sox.  Hoffpauir went 2-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.  It proved to be a nice homecoming for Joe Mather, who lives in Phoenix, as he finished the day 3-5 with a stolen base as the Mesa DH.  On the pitching side, Jason Motte got the win in relief allowing only one hit in 1.1 shutout innings.  Kyle McClellan gave up a hit and got a strikeout in an inning of work.

Also, in the AFL, Blake Dewitt’s Peoria Saguaros were in action.  Blake didn’t get the start but neither did uber prospect Cameron Maybin.   How important is the Arizona Fall League?  100 players in this year’s playoffs participated in the AFL.

LaRussa situation is getting messier and messier.  It is reminding me of the Jeff Weaver negotiations from last offseason. No one seems to be on the same page.   Check out Brian Walton’s column on the subject over at the Birdhouse.
